VOLUNTEER AT ST ISABEL PARISH
In the Diocese of Venice the process for screening Lay Volunteers has been streamlined and Safe Environment trainings are now offered online. The Diocese classifies a covered volunteer as "any unpaid adult person engaged or involved in a diocesan activity in which he/she is entrusted with the care and supervision of children or allowed unsupervised access to children or "vulnerable adults" (e.g. when screened personnel not present).
The Diocese of Venice, in an effort to ensure the safety of those persons under the care of the Diocese, states that, "all employees, covered volunteers and religious brothers and sisters must be electronically fingerprinted pursuant to the instructions listed under this same topic under Fingerprinting. Eligibility for employment/volunteer work/ministry will be contingent and conditioned upon a satisfactory background investigation. A reasonable effort shall be made to update the criminal history background information every five (5) years". St. Isabel also requires the following volunteers to go through the background screening process (through fingerprints):
• Volunteers who handle cash, and other financial transactions
• Volunteers who are entrusted with confidential information, such as donor records and
parish registration forms
• (Extrordinary Minister) Volunteers who serve, distribute, and administer the Holy Eucharist
• (Lector) Volunteers who proclaim God's word to form our hearts to help us grow in our liturgical prayer.
• Volunteers who lead Parish Groups and or are Board Members (e.g. President/VP/Secretary/Treasurer of the Men's Society/Bread & Roses)

As Christian adults, we have a moral and legal responsibility and are entrusted by God with the spiritual, emotional and physical well-being of minors and vulnerable adults. As they participate in activities within or sponsored by our diocese, it is our commitment to provide an environment which is safe and nurturing.
Therefore, the mission of the Safe Environment Program is:
- To provide required education for all employees (clergy, religious and laity), those volunteers and others regularly involved with minors, and parents, as to the issue of abuse of children including the detection, prevention, and reporting of child abuse.
- To provide required training programs for children and young people in our Catholic schools and religious education programs. This includes age- appropriate materials pertaining to personal safety and information about improper touching and relationships. Children are not expected to be fully knowledgeable about child abuse or of the laws governing care of children but they need to know when they should seek assistance from a trusted adult.
- To thoroughly screen and evaluate the background of all diocesan employees – clergy, religious and laity – and those volunteers.
- To hold those who minister in the name of the Church of Venice – all diocesan employees (clergy, religious and laity) and volunteers to Christ-centered and professional codes of conduct.
